Well Woman Exam
The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends an annual well woman exam as it is “a fundamental part of medical care and it is valuable in promoting prevention practices, recognizing risk factors for disease, identifying medical problems, and establishing the patient-physician relationship.”
The annual well woman exam serves as a time for you and your healthcare provider to review your comprehensive medical history, identify new and ongoing issues, and screen for preventable illnesses. Annual well woman visits are recommended even if individual components of the exam are not performed every year, such as pap testing.
Common issues addressed at your annual exam include:
- Contraception
- Cervical cancer screening/pap testing (learn more by reading an FAQ or infographic from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists)
- Mammogram screening
- Osteoporosis screening
- Sexually transmitted infection screening
- Menopause (learn more from ACOG about menopause and hormone therapy)
- Nutrition, physical activity and weight management
- Smoking cessation
