A myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a myoma, or a fibroid tumor, from the wall of the uterus. Fibroid tumors are common, and when asymptomatic, they do not require treatment. However, if a woman’s fibroids are problematic, causing symptoms such as abnormal or heavy bleeding, pain, or rapid growth, surgical management may be indicated. Depending on the size, number, and location of the fibroids, the surgery can be accomplished several different ways, including hysteroscopically through the cervix, laparoscopically through several small abdominal incisions, abdominally with a traditional, larger abdominal incision.
